Aluminum vs steel.

Aluminum is the third most common element in the Earth’s crust. Aluminum accounts for 8 percent of the outermost surface. It is the crust’s most abundant metal.
 
Iron is the fourth most common element in the Earth’s crust. Iron accounts for 5 percent of the outermost surface. Iron combined with carbon makes steel.

We use aluminum for our products because this metal is most sustainable.
 
Aluminum is also light, strong and easy to process.
 
Aluminum has great design freedom.

The production of primary aluminum relies heavily on energy.

By contrast, relatively little energy is required to:

transport aluminum (low weight per volume)
 
manufacture products from aluminum (low temperature of the smelting process)
 
recycle aluminum (compared to production from raw materials)

Aluminum can be recycled time and time again without losing its quality. This recycling process consumes merely 5% of the energy initially required to produce primary aluminum.

The world is short and will stay short of recycled aluminum.

Only 30 percent1 of global aluminum consumption comes from recycling.

 

The consumption rate of aluminum will only increase and, because of sustainability, we will have to wait longer and longer until aluminum products are discarded and recycled.

It makes no difference who uses the recycled aluminum, or which product it contains. If recycled aluminum is not used in one product, it will certainly be used in another.

Aluminum vs fiber-reinforced composite-made.

Fiberglass is widely acknowledged as a material that has major advantages over its more conventional rival aluminum.
 
It is less energy-intensive in development and is used extensively for products which decrease carbon emissions.

How fiberglass is recycled.

Granulated composite can replace fossil fuels and can be used as a substitute for new raw materials.
 
Example: the production of cement is dependent on large quantities of sand. And sand is also the main constituent of glass, and thus also of fiberglass. Fiberglass additionally contains resin which can be used as an energy source in cement production, thereby replacing the use of fossil fuels.
 
Result: recycling 1000 tonnes of specific composite in cement manufacture saves up to 450 tonnes of coal, 200 tonnes of chalk, 200 tonnes of sand and 150 tonnes of aluminum oxide. And the recycling process produces no dust, ash or other residues.

The carbon footprint is first and foremost about weight.

The carbon footprint is determined by the amounts of aluminum, steel, glass and plastic that are used to make our products and that are reused after recycling.

End-of-life recycling approach.

Aluminum will always remain within the chain. This end-of-life recycling approach is the latest and most widely accepted approach to calculating the carbon footprint of an aluminum product.
 
The recycled content approach is based on percentages of post-industrial and post-consumer recycled aluminum material in a specific product.
